I concluded a Ph.D. in Biology - Ecology and Biosystematics at the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Sciences, in 1999. I am a researcher of the cE3c, in the Natural History & Systematics Group and in the Plant, Lichen and Fungi Systematics, Biogeography & Conservation Genetics subgroup.
My present position is Assistant Professor at the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Pharmacy, teaching Pharmaceutical Botany and Lab Biology. My main research interests are on plant species diversity of Portuguese and Macaronesian flora. I collaborate with several colleagues in different studies, including the morphology and phytochemistry of medicinal and aromatic plants, glandular structures, secondary metabolites and biological activities. These collaborations have been with groups of the Department of Plant Biology - FCUL, Instituto Superior de Agronomia - UL, Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária (INIAV), Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical (IICT) and Instituto Nacional de Investigação e Desenvolvimento Agrário, Cape Verde. My current research is on plant micromorphology and phytochemistry of species from the montado ecosystem, their secondary metabolites as a source of active principles.
