MITE2: Multidisciplinary Investigation Targeting Ecology and Evolution

Afonso Grandela

Grant Researcher

Experimental Evolution Thermal Adaptation Sexual Selection

I graduated in Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon in July 2020, and I finished my M.Sc. in Evolutionary and Developmental Biology also at FCUL in July 2023. During my master’s degree, I was a grant researcher within the scope of the FCT project ADAPTCLIMWARM, under the supervision of Dr. Pedro Simões (Local Adaptation in Drosophila subgroup). In my master’s thesis, I studied the mating behaviour and fertility of a monandrous insect (Drosophila subobscura) under thermal stress. I was particularly interested in understanding if the evolution and/or a plastic shift of the mating system occur to help populations cope with high temperatures. Currently, I am working in the MITE2 lab as a grant research holder within the FCT project CLIMAX, under the supervision of Dra. Leonor Rodrigues. This project aims to assess the impact of climate change on a crop pest’s (spider mites) reproduction and on the interaction with its host plant.
