Summary:

Measuring insect rarity: problems and perspectives in conservation biology

Rarity measures are frequently used as proxies of species vulnerability and hence to establish conservation priorities. This is especially important when other pieces of information about species extinction risk are difficult to obtain, as commonly found for most insects. Three types of rarity are commonly recognized: geographical, ecological, and population. I discuss here what they mean, how they can be measured, which type of data are needed and how they can be used to assess conservation priorities.
