I received a Ph.D. in Animal Ecology from the University of the Azores in 1997, with a thesis on the community structure of littoral marine fishes. My main teaching is at the undergraduate level, where I am responsible for Ichthology and Marine Mammal Biology.
I am strongly committed to leveraging the role of biodiversity research in the sustainable development of Europe’s overseas regions. In this context I coordinate the NetBiome-CSA project, involving 13 partners from 7 ORs and OCTs, including also Cape Verde. I am also coordinating the Macaronesian hub of the BEST III network, which is setting up biodiversity priorities and will facilitate funding for research and conservation in all biogeographic regions with European presence.
My research has been centered on the biology of fishes and their role in the ecosystems, and this has led me into freshwater, where I led a biomanipulation project. More recently I have added marine mammals to my list of research subjects. I am proud of having participated in setting up the MONICET platform for collecting and sharing cetacean distribution and photoidentification data collected by whale-watching companies.
In the near future, I see myself (1) working to coordinate biodiversity research and conservation across European overseas regions and territories, (2) helping develop an instrument to convert opportunistic observations of cetacean distribution into usable population estimates and distribution maps and (3) contributing to the development of methods to easily assess the role of fish on freshwater lakes.
