Plant functional ecology Dryland ecology Ecological restoration Ecological indicators Global change research

I have a master in Biostatistics, and PhD in Biology and Ecology of Global Change by the Universities of Lisbon and Aveiro (June 2017). My PhD work was focused on the response of plant functional traits to climate in Mediterranean drylands, both along space and over time, and its application to improve land management and restoration strategies to combat desertification and land degradation. Currently (July 2020 on), I have a junior research contract within the scope of the Scientific Employment Stimulus Individual Support by FCT.

My main research areas are Plant Functional Ecology and Ecological Restoration, particularly in the context of Dryland Ecosystems. My research is focused on the response of ecosystems to both natural and anthropogenic global change drivers (e.g. climate, land use), particularly of dryland ecosystems. I am focused on trait-based ecology to develop ecological indicators of the effects of environmental changes on ecosystem functioning, resilience and ecosystem services delivery, and as a tool to improve strategies to manage, adapt and restore ecosystems affected by global change. In Portugal, a large part of my work has been developed in agro-forestry systems, particularly in oak woodlands (montado). I am also interested in testing these indicators in different dryland areas of the world, through ongoing international collaboration with researchers e.g. from semiarid areas in Brazil. Additionally, another key area of my research activities is Ecosystem Restoration, and I am currently co-coordinating the Portuguese Ecological Restoration Network.
