The programme is organized by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), with the collaboration of the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (cE3c), Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO), Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC) and Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP). These Units develop research of international excellence in Biodiversity, Functional Ecology, Phylogenetics, Evolution, Behaviour, Theoretical Biology, Developmental Biology and Bioinformatics, among other fields, and are equipped with high tech laboratories, as well as a Field Station.
Conditions to apply to BIODIV are the following:
The BIODIV Programme accepts candidates:
from any nationality (with permanent residence in Portugal). More information at BIODIV’s website.
holding a Master’s, or equivalent degree, or holding a 4 or 5-year degree (pre-Bologna) in Biological Sciences*, concluded until the application deadline.
having a final grade (4 or 5-year degree -pre-Bologna- or post-Bologna Master) equal or greater than 14/20 or equivalent. Exceptions could be considered if the candidate is the author of an original work, already published or in press (with doi or proof of acceptance for publication) in indexed journals (Web of Science) until the application deadline, or has an indicator of a similar achievement widely accepted by the national and international scientific communities in the area in which the candidate is applying.
with all academic degrees (BSc, MSc) completed abroad recognized by a Portuguese public institution of higher education or by ‘Direção Geral do Ensino Superior’. More information at BIODIV’s website and at DGES website.
that haven't been previously funded by FCT with a PhD scholarship.
*other scientific backgrounds with an adequate academic and scientific component can be also considered.
Directed to: BSc and MSc students in Biology, Environmental studies, Geography or related areas
BIODIV is a graduate programme that leads to the acquisition of a PhD degree in several specialties as indicated in the corresponding plans (for further informations see below). The programme includes a first year with several courses, seminars and laboratory rotations (see Advanced courses 2013,Advanced courses 2014, Advanced courses 2015, Advanced courses 2016 and Advanced courses 2017 (available soon)), followed by three years of research corresponding to the development of the PhD project and dissertation. The students can take advantage of the resources available in both Universities during the entire period of the programme, though they are registered, and mainly affected in one of the two Universities.
