Summary:
Previous studies on the freshwater ecosystems of the Azores have knowledge gaps that negatively affect the correct implementation of the Water Framework Directive. Therefore, research is needed to fill that gap in three fundamental areas:
i) developing new metrics to evaluate the state of freshwater masses;
ii) validating methods to use environmental DNA in the quantitative monitoring of freshwater fishes;
iii) use of molecular techniques to detect cianotoxic potential.
