Tropical Plants and Systems

Sílvia Raquel Moço Catarino

PhD Student

Sílvia Catarino is conducting a Ph.D. in Biology by the University of Lisbon starting in April 2017 within the Environmental Stress & Functional Ecology Group of cE3c. She is conducting the project Conservation planning in tropical regions under climate change: a case-study of Angola flora, under the supervision of Maria Romeiras (cE3c), José Miguel Pereira (CEF) and Rui Figueira (ISA/UL).  Sílvia Ph.D. project aims are: (i) To study and define the main spatio-temporal patterns and environmental correlates of the Angolan Leguminosae to inform conservation planning; (ii) To develop species distribution models for predicting the spatial distribution of Leguminosae, and associated uncertainties, under current and future climate scenarios; and (iii) To develop protected areas selection exercises that achieve maximal biodiversity coverage under current and future climate conditions, considering the constraints imposed by land use, such as deforestation and urban dynamics.
