I am a biogeographer with broad interests in island biogeography, macroecology, community ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. My research interests span diverse themes such as diversity theory, species-area relationship, scale in ecological and biogeographical analysis, ecological modelling and environmental heterogeneity. I am an authority in the systematics and and biogeography of a number of taxa of the Aegean Islands (Greece), such as land snails.
After my research training, MSc and PhD at the Biology Department (University of Crete) and the Natural History Museum of Crete (Greece) (1996-2006), I worked as a post-doc at the Department of Biology (University of Patras; 2006-2007). I was then awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship (EIF) at the Oxford University Centre for the Environment (OUCE), (2007-2008). From November 2008 I worked as a post-doc at the Azorean Biodiversity Group (CITA-A, University of Azores, Terceira) and from August 2008 I am a Visiting Research Associate of the School of Geography (University of Oxford) as a member of the Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Conservation research cluster. I was also Visiting Professor at the University of Bayreuth (Department of Biogeography; 2011). In May (2010) I was elected as an Assistant Professor at theDepartment of Biology of the University of Athens. From August (2012) to April (2015) I was Special Secretary for Water at the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change.
