Helena Josefina Kjöllerström is conducting a Ph.D. in Biology/Conservation Biology by the University of Lisbon starting in 2010 within the Evolutionary Genetics group of cE3c. She is conducting the project “Cytogenetic and genetic approach to screen for infertility and sub-fertility of the endangered Sorraia horse breed: an important tool for conservation”, under the supervision of Prof. Maria do Mar Oom from cE3c, University of Lisbon, Portugal and Prof. Bhanu Chowdhary, Texas A&M University, USA.
The project “Cytogenetic and genetic approach to screen for infertility and sub-fertility of the endangered Sorraia horse breed: an important tool for conservation” aims to provide complementary data for future conservation plans by allowing the identification of inbreeding depression on individual fitness, chromosomal abnormalities and other genome level defects that are potentially responsible for observed reduced fertility in mares and stallions and permitting a whole genome assessment of genetic variability.
